International Student Scholar Award
Applicants with strong academic backgrounds may qualify for this scholarship with awards ranging from $1000-$6000 per year.


  • Equivalent grade point average of a 3.0 on a 4.0 point scale
  • Proof of English proficiency

Enrolled students may apply for scholarships through their academic departments, although many awards are restricted to U.S. citizens or permanent residents and are for comparatively small amounts. An online scholarship board can be viewed at

Out-of-State Scholar Award
Award is based on SAT exam results

Three Tiers:

  • $3,000 - 1130 or higher (old SAT CR/M) or 1200 or higher (new SAT)
  • $2,000 - 1050-1120 (old SAT CR/M) or 1130-1190 (new SAT)
  • $1,000 - 940-1040 (old SAT CR/M) or 1020-1120 (new SAT)

Presidential Scholar Award
Award value is $8,000 per year for students in the top 10% of their class, a score of 1340 or above on the new SAT (29 on ACT), and extra-curricular activities. Visit to learn more. Deadline January 15th.

UNI Sister States ScholarshipThe value is in the amount of $4000 per year and is available to all new incoming degree-seeking students including freshman and transfer.  Students will be eligible upon proving resident status in one of the sister state regions and by meeting the UNI international admission requirements.  The Iowa Sister States include: Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan; Yucatan, Mexico; Hebei Province, China; Terengganu, Malaysia; Stavropol Krai, Russia; Taiwan; Cherkasy Oblast, Ukraine; Veneto Region, Italy; and Kosovo.  

Graduate Assistantships and Graduate College Tuition Scholarships
Graduate assistantships and scholarships are offered by some departments on a competitive basis. Graduate students applying for funding must submit an application before the February 1st deadline.

There are many job opportunities on the UNI campus for students with student (F) visas or exchange visitor (J) visas to work. The average wages range from $8.00 - $8.50 per hour. F and J visa holders are not authorized to work off campus as a means of support except under extraordinary circumstances. An online job board can be previewed here.
